Naked Tree Identification Hike at Belle Isle State Park

  • Belle isle State Park (map)

The workshop will be held at Belle Isle State Park, on 21 Feb 2018, starting at the Canoe Launch Parking Lot from 10:00AM to Noon.

It’s February, your team lost the super bowl, you had to shovel snow in January, you are hiding from the flu, but even worse you have cabin fever.  Here is a chance to get outside and learn to identify trees - naked trees!  Most field guides and computer APPS rely on leaves to identify tree species. But how do you identify them when they are “naked," or without their leaves? Participants will learn to identify trees by shape, bark, odor, habitat, and other characteristics. Learning these additional identification methods and field marks will enhance your skills year-round. The hike will be lead by Charlene Talcott, a certified Virginia Master Naturalist in the Northern Neck Chapter of the Virginia Master Naturalists.  This is an outdoor event open to the public. Please dress for the weather and prepare to hug a tree.
