This is a free presentation titled “The Living Shoreline” that will be presented as a Zoom (virtual) program on Thursday, Sept. 16th at 7 pm. The speaker is noted marine biologist and educator, Karen Duhring, from the Center for Coastal Zone Management at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science. “Karen’s program will discuss how the choices we make in on our waterfront landscapes impact everything from storm surge and erosion to all of our fisheries” said, Kevin Howe, First Vice President of the Virginia Native Plant Society. “A Living Shoreline is a river and bay-friendly management practice that protects, restores and/or enhances the natural habitat of the shoreline. This not only protects your property but manages erosion while enhancing habitat for plants and animals that are so vital to the food web of the aquatic environment. Living shorelines use native plantings alone or in combination with stone, sand, and other organic materials to provide a stable and balanced resilient system.”
